What You Didn’t Know About Diamonds

What You Didn’t Know About Diamonds - The Better Diamonds

They say “diamonds are a girls best friend”, but how well do you really know diamonds? Check out these fun facts you may not have come across when thinking about your next diamond ring.

Did you know, that lab grown diamonds are as real as naturally grown ones? It’s true! You can even ask the GIA and IGI. The 4 C’s (color, carat, cut, and clarity), are tested to the same rigorous standard as natural diamonds. The best part is, you can get a lab grown diamond for a much better price than the equivalent earth grown one. Why? It’s simple, and no, it is not because they compromise on quality. Due to the fact that you don’t need they huge amount of resources and tools you would when mining, going lab grown means you not paying for massive behind the scene production costs. Sure, there are costs to produce lab diamonds, just like there costs to produce most things in life, but you are paying a truer and fairer price for the value of the product when it is made in controlled conditions.

Imagine a world where diamonds grow on trees. Well while that is yet to be found, in 2004 scientists have discovered a planet that they think is at least one third, if not mostly made up of diamonds! So next time you look into a telescope keep an eye out for a sparkling world named “55 Cancri e”.

You remember the phrase “diamonds are forever”? Well, even if not forever, they do last a very long time. They are so hard in fact that the only thing that can cut through a diamond is, well, another diamond. So even if you drop your ring, a diamond may fall off, but it won’t break anytime soon.

Diamonds seem to be found here, there and everywhere. Going back to the scientists, it appears that diamonds in space are not that uncommon. The biggest one in the universe weighing 2.27 thousand trillion tons, with up to 10 billion carats in weight. Can we get a price check for that please?!

Life is all about compromise. This also applies to the world of diamonds. When they are in their rough state they carry up to 50% more carat weight when compared to a cut and polished one. However, after having undergone the refining process, the diamond shows its full potential in terms of fire, brilliance, and scintillation.

Ever wondered why a flickering candle has a bounty of colors in its flame? Well, according to Professor of chemistry Wuzong Zhou at the University of St Andrews, around 1.5 million diamond nanoparticles can be found in a candle’s flame. Not bad for a few dollars worth of candles.
